Juanita Vandergriff Mantooth, 84, went home to her Heavenly Father on September 9, 2021. In her final days, she was surrounded by her loving family and friends. Juanita served our community over 25 years while working for the Knoxville Police Department and the Knox County Sheriff’s Office. She was the first woman to be promoted to Sergeant in corrections and retired as a Lieutenant in 2011. Juanita carried on the legacy of her mother by being a champion for her children. She raised her children to believe in themselves, set high goals, and took great pride in witnessing their accomplishments.
Juanita was preceded in death by her husband, William Mantooth, mother, Orpha Lowe Rollins, and her father, Herman Rollins. She is survived by her sister, Trula Houser (Don); her children Mark Christopher Sayne (Vickie), Greg Vandergriff (Cindy), Karla Vandergriff Farabow, Maria Vandergriff-Avery (Christopher), and Tonya Vandergriff Childress (Todd); her stepchildren Doug Vandergriff (Debbie), Robin Vandergriff Underwood (Jay), Penny Vandergriff Behrens (James), Wayne Mantooth (Lisa), Michelle Mantooth Kughn (Fred), and Michael Mantooth (Kim); and her favorite (four-legged) child, Pipi. She is also survived by numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and life-long friends, Jeanette Human, Georgia Hamilton, and Joyce Wooliver.
The family will receive friends Sunday, September 19, from 2:00pm to 4:00pm at Atchley Funeral Home, 122 Peacock Court Seymour, TN 37865. The funeral service will follow at 4:00pm. A graveside service for family and close friends will be held Monday, September 20 at 8:30am, East Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery, 2200 E Governor John Sevier Hwy, Knoxville, TN 37920. The family requests that guests wear a mask to aid in reducing the spread of Covid-19. In lieu of flowers, a donation in Juanita’s name may be made to Seymour United Methodist Church P.O. BOX 1488, Seymour, TN 37865. Online Condolences may be made at www.atchleyfuneralhome.com
