Ernie Smith - Class of 1971

Ernest Lee Smith “Ernie” age 69 passed away September 10th after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. Just like he dealt with all experiences in life, Ernie managed his illness with strength and grace and wanted to spend as much time with his loved ones as possible. He once loved hunting with family & Friends and enjoyed fishing on beach trips with his family. On his final day he was surrounded at home by his family, who he adored more than anything else in the world. Ernie was of Baptist faith and a member of Cumberland Baptist Church but attended Ridgedale Baptist with his grandchildren. He served his country in Guam during the Vietnam Era and previously worked at Fred’s Alignment before retiring from the City of Knoxville Police Garage where he was a paint and Body repairman. Preceded in death by parents Mark & Audrey Smith. Brothers Robert “Bronson”, Lynn, Reed & Charlie Smith. In laws Tom (Ruth) Bowling, Jimmy & Michael “Bo” Bowling. And nephew James “Tripper” Caldwell. He leaves behind his loving wife of 49 years Cathy (Bowling) Smith. Two daughters Shauna and husband Josh Hunt and Keri Smith and life partner Mendy Covington. Two grandchildren he thought the world of Bryana & Braylon Hunt. Brother Wayne Smith. In laws Vickie (Jim) Pendergrass, Kaye Long and Sandy Smith. Nieces & Nephews Bryan Long, Philip (Kristin) Pendergrass, Laura and Joe Pendergrass. Special Family Members Jon (Gladys) Pence. Extended family Danny (Sheila), Curt (Darlene), Tim (Rebecca), Chris Hutchison (Kim McKelvey), and Cory Woods. The family will receive friends from 5 pm to 7 pm on Monday September 12, at ROSE FUNERAL & CREMATION BROADWAY. A funeral service will follow with John McDougle officiating. Family and friends will meet at ROSE FUNERAL & CREMATION BROADWAY on Tuesday September 13th at 12:00pm for procession to Greenwood Cemetery on Tazewell Pike. The graveside service with military honors will be held at 1:00pm and officiated by Tim Hutchison.
