COACH ROBERT (BOB) V. POLSTON

POLSTON, ROBERT V. (BOB) - retired Athletic Director of Knox County School System, died Saturday, August 6, 2011 at Mercy Medical Center, St. Mary's after a sudden illness at the age of 76. Bob was born on October 22, 1934 in Nashville, Tennessee to the late Robert Vaughn Polston and Elizabeth Bozza Polston. Bob was a longtime member of Crossroads Presbyterian Church. He was retired from the Knox County School System where he served as Athletic Director. He was the former football and baseball coach at East High School, Austin-East High School and Rule High School. Bob was inducted into the TSSAA Hall of Fame, the Knoxville Sports Hall of Fame and the East Tennessee Baseball Coach Hall of Fame. He was selected as the recipient of the KFL Coach of the Year for 5 terms and was named the East Tennessee Coach of the Year for 4 terms. In addition, he was named the National Athletic Director of the Year. Being civic minded and interested in the welfare of our city's youth, Bob served as a former director and board member of the Knoxville Boys Club. He is survived by his loving wife, Dorothy Anderson Polston of Knoxville; son and daughter-in-law, Doug and Trina Polston; daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Dwyane Arnold; grandchildren, Alison and Lemuel Arnold and Tyler Polston; sister, Sarah Polston Anderson; several nieces and nephews. Family and friends will meet at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Rose Mortuary Broadway Chapel to travel in procession to Lynnhurst Cemetery where a graveside service will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. officiated by Dr. Dean Anderson and Reverend Robert Cook. A eulogy will be presented by Glen Worley. Pallbearers will be Carl Torbush, Pete Stafford, Glen Worley, Dwight Smith, George Kemp, Steven Scruggs and Mac Stalcup. The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Monday evening at the mortuary. Memorial contributions may be given in Bob's memory to either Halls High School Baseball Team or to the Knoxville Boys Club. Online condolences may be extended at http://www.rosemortuary.com.
