Charles Edward "Burr" Anderson, age 92, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 25, 2016 at Ben Atchley Veteran's Home. Charlie was born to George and Nora Anderson on February 15, 1924 and was a lifelong Knoxville resident. He grew up in the Westview Community and played football at Rule High School, Class of 1944. Charlie served in the U.S. Navy aboard the battleship USS Mississippi from 1943-1946, witnessing the signing of surrender documents in Tokyo Bay on V-J Day, September 2, 1945. He received the Navy Commendation Ribbon for Outstanding Heroism in action against the Japanese forces. He enjoyed attending ship reunions in Jackson, Mississippi and was an avid collector of WWII books and films. After the war, from 1946 through 1952, Charlie played baseball for several semi-professional teams in the southeast. Following his baseball career, he worked for Oak Ridge Y-12 until his retirement in 1985. Charlie was an active member of Second United Methodist Church, until his health declined. He sang in the Chancel Choir, worked faithfully in the Community Food Ministry, and taught Sunday School for over 20 years. He was a student of the Bible and those lessons came across in the way he lived. He was humble, kind, honest, and never critical of others. He knew the Lord had blessed him and he was truly grateful. Charlie was married to Maeola Lynch Anderson from 1962, until her death in 1996. He married Wanda Turner Anderson in 1999; she passed away in September.

He is also predeceased by his brother George; sister, Mary Anderson Bell; step-son, Lewis E. Lynch, Jr., step-grandsons, Jon Marie and Neil Seymour. Charlie is survived by his devoted daughter, Stephanie (Russell) Carpenter and his son, Todd (Kristi); sisters, Barbara (Bill) Fair and Mildred Tucker; stepson, David Turner; step-daughters, Nancy (Tim) Wilkinson, Julie (Joe) Brannum, Susan (Brad) White, and Karen (Charles) Collins; step-children, Jo (Fred) Seymour, Toni Marie both of Knoxville, Katie (Harry) Paul of Kennesaw, GA, Karen Cherukuri of Pittsburgh, PA; seventeen step-grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
