Rev. David Gerald Smith, age 70, of South Knoxville passed away peacefully at home and was welcomed into the arms of his Lord and Savior on April 18, 2018. David graduated from Rule High School and attended the University of Tennessee where he graduated with a degree in history. David continued his studies at Candler School of Theology at Emory University. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force. David served as a Minister with the Holston Conference of United Methodist Churches for 36 years. He was preceded in death by father, Paul Smith, Sr. David is survived by his wife of 39 years, Sherry Smith; daughter, Lauren S. and husband Matt Robinson; son, Zachary D. Smith; grandson, Michael Robinson; mother, Mildred F. Smith; sisters, Carol (Bill) Brogdon, Jeanne (Bill) Stephens, Annie Frankenberg; brother, Paul (Deborah) Smith, Jr. The family will receive friends 1-2 pm Saturday at Second United Methodist Church, 1525 Western Avenue in Knoxville followed by a service of death and resurrection at 2 pm. Rev. Charles Maynard officiating. Family and friends will gather at Woodlawn Cemetery 3 pm Sunday, April 22, 2018 for graveside services. In lieu of traditional remembrances memorials may be made to Second Harvest Food Bank, 136 Harvest Ln, Maryville, TN 37801; Habitat for Humanity of Blount County, 1017 Hampshire Drive, Maryville, TN 37801; and UMCOR care of New Salem United Methodist Church, 2417 Tipton Station Road, Knoxville, TN 37920.
